Microsoft SharePoint is a fantastic platform for intranets, document repositories and other specialised needs. It is highly customisable using even the default out-of-box functionality. It is a reliable platform and easily supported by any number of 3rd party service provides.

SharePoint comes in a number of flavours. First and foremost, my experience is with SharePoint Services 2007 and SharePoint 2010. Both editions ship with Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 without attracting additional licensing costs.
